Aelbert Cuyp

Aelbert Cuyp was a Dutch painter of the Golden Age celebrated for his golden, sunlit landscapes. Born in Dordrecht in 1620, he is best known for peaceful scenes of cattle and herdsmen beside rivers, bathed in the warm glow of early morning or late afternoon light. He learned to flood his landscapes with a rich, Italian-style sunlight that gives them a serene, timeless beauty.

He also painted river views, horsemen, and the occasional seascape, always with that signature warm radiance. Little appreciated for a time after his death, he was later especially admired by British collectors, who prized his golden light. Cuyp's tranquil, glowing landscapes are now counted among the finest achievements of Dutch painting.
