Akseli Gallen-Kallela

Akseli Gallen-Kallela was a Finnish painter who helped shape his country's sense of national identity. Born in 1865, he trained in Paris but found his deepest subject in the Kalevala, Finland's national epic of myths and heroes. His bold, dramatic illustrations of its ancient stories, full of struggle and magic, became iconic images for Finns seeking pride and independence from Russian rule.

Beyond mythology he painted the lakes, forests, and harsh winters of Finland, along with striking portraits, moving between a decorative national-romantic style and looser, more modern approaches. He also worked in frescoes, design, and architecture. Gallen-Kallela is regarded as one of the greatest Finnish artists and a central figure in the cultural awakening of his nation.
