Albert Chevallier Tayler

Albert Chevallier Tayler was an English painter associated with the Newlyn School, a colony of artists working in a fishing village in Cornwall. Born in London in 1862, he trained in London and Paris before joining the painters drawn to Newlyn by its strong light and hardy coastal community. There he painted the daily life of fishing families with sympathy and careful realism.

Later he shifted toward portraits and elegant costume and historical scenes, and he is also remembered for a well-known painting of a county cricket match. His work reflects the late Victorian taste for both honest social observation and polished, decorative subjects. Tayler remains a respected name from the Newlyn circle and the wider British art of his era.
