Christina’s World shows Anna Christina Olson, Wyeth’s neighbor in rural Maine. Christina lived with a degenerative condition that left her unable to walk, yet she refused to use a wheelchair. Instead she pulled herself across the ground with her arms, moving through the world on her own terms. Wyeth watched her from the window of the farmhouse while sketching and was struck not by her struggle, but by her determination.

The painting captures one of those moments. Christina lies in the vast field, not in despair, but in motion.
