Carl Bloch

Carl Bloch was a Danish painter celebrated for his religious scenes. Born in Copenhagen in 1834, he trained at the Danish Academy and made his early reputation with history paintings and scenes of everyday life. He is best known today for a large series of paintings on the life of Christ, created to decorate a royal chapel, which combine warm color, careful drawing, and deep feeling.

Those gospel scenes became widely reproduced and remain especially beloved in religious communities around the world. Bloch was highly honored in his lifetime and regarded as one of Denmark's finest painters. His moving, humane images of biblical stories are his most enduring legacy.
