Charles Rosen

Charles Rosen was an American painter associated with the art colony at New Hope, Pennsylvania. Born in 1878, he first became known as an Impressionist, painting the Delaware River and the surrounding countryside with soft light and gentle color. His snowy river scenes from this period were widely admired and won him early success.

Later in his career he made a bold change, moving toward a more modern, structured style with firmer shapes and design, and turning to harbor and industrial subjects. This willingness to reinvent himself set him apart from many of his fellow colony painters. Rosen is remembered for both his lyrical early landscapes and his later modern work.
