David Hockney
1937 – 2026 • 8 artworks
David Hockney is a British artist widely seen as one of the most influential of his generation. Born in Bradford in 1937, he made a splash as a young Pop artist before becoming famous for bright, sunlit paintings of Los Angeles swimming pools, most notably the crisp blue water and lone splash of A Bigger Splash. His clear color and cool light captured the glamour of California.
Restlessly curious about how we see, he has worked in painting, printmaking, photo collage, stage design, and, more recently, drawings made on iPads. He has returned again and again to the landscape of his native Yorkshire, painting the changing seasons on a huge scale. Hockney's lifelong experiments with color, space, and new technology have kept him at the center of contemporary art for over sixty years.
