E. Phillips Fox was an Australian painter admired for his sunlit, colorful Impressionist works. Born in Melbourne in 1865, he trained in Europe, where he absorbed the bright palette and loose brushwork of French Impressionism. He returned to Australia and helped bring that fresh, light-filled style to his home country, painting beach scenes, gardens, and elegant figures bathed in sunshine.
He divided his career between Australia and Europe, exhibiting successfully in Paris. His paintings glow with warm light and a real joy in color and everyday pleasure. Fox is remembered as one of the finest Australian Impressionists, prized for the sparkle and warmth of his sunlit scenes.
