Edgar Payne

Edgar Payne was an American painter known for bold, sunlit landscapes of the western United States. Born in Missouri in 1883 and largely self-taught, he became a leading figure among the California Impressionists. He painted the rugged Sierra Nevada mountains, desert canyons, and coastal scenes with strong shapes and rich color, giving his work a sense of grandeur and solid structure.

He also traveled to Europe, painting the harbors of France and Italy with their colorful sailing boats. He wrote a respected book on landscape composition that is still read by painters today. Payne's powerful, well-designed views of mountains and sea have made him one of the most admired painters of the American West.
