Edouard Vuillard

Edouard Vuillard was a French painter known for intimate, richly patterned scenes of domestic life. Born in 1868, he was part of the Nabis, a group of young artists who valued flat color, pattern, and mood over realism. He specialized in cozy interiors showing family and friends absorbed in ordinary tasks, often nearly lost among the busy wallpapers, fabrics, and furnishings around them.

His mother was a seamstress, and the textiles of the family home fill his work with dense, decorative pattern. These quiet scenes have a warm, enveloping feeling, as if we are glimpsing a private world. Along with his friend Pierre Bonnard, Vuillard is celebrated for turning the small moments of home life into subtle, beautiful painting.
