Edward Mitchell Bannister

Edward Mitchell Bannister was a Black American painter who achieved real success in the nineteenth century despite the racism of his time. Born in Canada around 1828, he settled in New England and became a respected landscape painter working in the mood-driven Barbizon style, with soft light and poetic, pastoral scenes of the countryside.

He won a major award at a national exhibition in 1876, only to be treated rudely once officials realized he was Black, an incident that underlined the barriers he faced. A founder of an art club in Providence, Rhode Island, he was admired by fellow artists. Bannister's gentle, atmospheric landscapes and his pioneering achievement have earned him growing recognition as an important figure in American art.
