Elioth Gruner

1882 – 19395 artworks

Elioth Gruner was an Australian painter admired for his luminous landscapes and mastery of light. Born in New Zealand in 1882 and raised in Sydney, he became one of Australia's leading painters in the early twentieth century. He was especially skilled at capturing the soft light of early morning, and his scenes of cattle, fields, and hazy dawns won him major prizes and wide acclaim.

Working in a gentle Impressionist manner, he chased fleeting effects of mist, frost, and sunrise across the Australian countryside. His painting Spring Frost, showing cows in a frosty paddock catching the first light, is one of the best loved works in Australian art. Gruner's tender, glowing landscapes secured his place among the country's most respected painters.
