Emily Carr

Emily Carr was a Canadian painter and writer who found her greatest subject in the forests and Indigenous cultures of the Pacific Northwest. Born in British Columbia in 1871, she traveled to remote coastal villages to paint totem poles and the towering rainforest, working for years in near isolation and obscurity. Only in her late fifties did she gain real recognition.

Her mature style is bold and swirling, with deep greens and skies that seem to move, capturing the dense, living energy of the West Coast woods. She was also a gifted writer whose books about her life and travels won a wide readership. Carr is now celebrated as one of Canada's most important and original artists, a powerful voice for its wild landscapes.
