Eustace Paul Ziegler

Eustace Paul Ziegler was an American painter who devoted his career to the landscapes and people of Alaska. Born in Michigan in 1881, he trained as a minister and first went to Alaska to run a mission before turning to art full time. He painted the territory's mountains, glaciers, prospectors, and Native people with warm color and a strong, sketchy touch.

He captured the rough frontier life of early twentieth century Alaska with real affection and energy. Later based in Seattle, he kept returning to Alaskan subjects throughout his life. Ziegler is remembered as one of the finest painters of the far northern frontier, preserving a vivid picture of a remote and rapidly changing world.
