Fitz Henry Lane

Fitz Henry Lane was an American painter and a central figure of Luminism, the style built around still water and glowing, even light. Born in Massachusetts in 1804, he was left partly disabled by an early illness and got his start making prints before turning to painting. He settled in the port town of Gloucester and devoted himself to painting the harbors, ships, and coastline of New England.

His marine scenes are remarkably calm and precise, with mirror-smooth water and skies that seem to hold their breath at dawn or dusk. That serene stillness gives his work a quiet, almost spiritual feeling. Largely forgotten after his death in 1865, Lane was rediscovered in the twentieth century and is now regarded as one of the finest American marine painters.
