Frank Reaugh

Frank Reaugh was an American artist often called the dean of Texas painters. Born in Illinois in 1860, he moved to Texas as a young man and grew captivated by its wide plains and, above all, its longhorn cattle. Working mostly in pastel, he captured the light, dust, and space of the open range in small, glowing works made from careful study of the land and animals.

He was also an inventor and teacher who led sketching trips across the Southwest, helping train a generation of Texas artists. His images preserve a vanishing world of open grazing land and great cattle herds. Reaugh's tender, atmospheric pastels have made him a treasured figure in the art of the American Southwest.
