Frederic Remington

Frederic Remington was an American artist who did more than almost anyone to shape the popular image of the Old West. Born in New York in 1861, he traveled through the western territories and returned with a vivid sense of cowboys, cavalry soldiers, and Native Americans. He became a hugely successful illustrator, painter, and sculptor, capturing horses and riders in full, dramatic motion.

His bronze sculptures, especially a rearing horse and rider, are among the most famous images of the frontier ever made. His work is full of action, dust, and danger, though it also reflects the romantic and sometimes troubling myths of his time. Remington's powerful visions of the West left a lasting mark on how Americans picture their frontier past.
