Glenn Brown

Glenn Brown is a British contemporary painter known for his strange, virtuoso reworkings of other artists' images. Born in 1966, he takes reproductions of paintings by old masters and modern artists and transforms them, twisting colors, stretching forms, and rendering thick, swirling brushstrokes as a perfectly smooth, glassy surface. Up close, what looks like heavy paint is revealed to be flat and slick.

His work plays games with originality, copying, and the whole history of painting, often with an eerie, science-fiction edge. He has also made sculptures piled high with real, twisting paint. Brown's technically dazzling and unsettling pictures have made him a distinctive and much-discussed figure in contemporary British art.
