Hans Gude

Hans Gude was a Norwegian painter and one of the country's most important landscape artists. Born in Oslo in 1825, he became a leading figure of Norwegian national Romantic painting, depicting the fjords, mountains, and coastal life of his homeland with both grandeur and careful detail. His scenes helped Norwegians take pride in their dramatic natural surroundings.

He was also a hugely influential teacher, working in Germany and shaping many younger Scandinavian painters. Over his long career his style moved from Romantic drama toward a fresher, more naturalistic approach, and he became especially skilled at painting water and weather. Gude remains a central figure in the story of Norwegian landscape art.
