Henry Moore

Henry Moore was a British sculptor and one of the most important artists his country has produced. Born in Yorkshire in 1898, the son of a coal miner, he became world famous for large, flowing abstract sculptures, especially reclining human figures and mother-and-child groups. His rounded, hollowed forms, often placed outdoors, seem to echo the shapes of hills, bones, and worn stone.

During the Second World War he made moving drawings of Londoners sheltering from air raids in the underground. His public sculptures now stand in cities around the world. Moore's powerful, organic forms brought modern sculpture to a wide audience and made him a defining figure of twentieth century British art.
