Jacek Malczewski

Jacek Malczewski was a Polish painter and a leading figure of Polish Symbolism. Born in 1854, he filled his work with dreamlike imagery blending Polish history, folklore, and personal symbolism. Angels, mythical creatures, and figures representing death or destiny appear in his scenes alongside ordinary Polish landscapes and people, giving everyday settings a mysterious, poetic charge.

His art often reflected on the fate and identity of Poland during a period when the country was divided and struggling for independence. He also painted many striking, imaginative self-portraits. Malczewski is regarded as one of the most important Polish artists, admired for the richness and originality of his symbolic vision.
