Jack Vettriano

Jack Vettriano was a Scottish painter who became hugely popular with the public despite scorn from many critics. Born in Fife in 1951, he worked as a mining engineer and taught himself to paint. He became famous for stylish, cinematic scenes of glamorous men and women, often caught in moments of romance, tension, or mystery. His best known work, The Singing Butler, shows a couple dancing on a beach as servants hold umbrellas against the wind.

Prints of his paintings sold in enormous numbers, making him one of the most commercially successful artists in Britain. Critics often dismissed the work as slick or sentimental, while his many fans loved its mood and storytelling. Vettriano, who died in 2025, remains a striking example of an artist embraced by the public on his own terms.
