James Dickson Innes

James Dickson Innes was a Welsh painter known for intense, colorful landscapes made during a short life. Born in Wales in 1887, he trained in London and became known for small, vivid views of mountains and open country, especially the hills of North Wales and later scenes from France and Spain. His work glows with bright, expressive color influenced by Post-Impressionism.

He often painted quickly and on a small scale, chasing the mood of a place rather than exact detail. His life was cut short by tuberculosis, and he died in 1914 at just twenty seven. Despite his brief career, Innes left a distinctive body of jewel-like landscapes that have kept his reputation alive among lovers of British painting.
