James McDougal Hart

James McDougal Hart was a Scottish-born American landscape painter linked to the Hudson River School. Born in Scotland in 1828, he came to the United States as a child and grew up in Albany, New York. After studying in Germany he settled into painting peaceful American landscapes, often featuring cattle grazing in meadows beside streams and stands of trees.

He and his brother William were both successful painters, part of a small artistic family. His work fits the mid-century American taste for pastoral, orderly views of nature that felt both grand and reassuring. James Hart's calm, well-crafted landscapes were popular in his day and remain a solid example of the Hudson River School tradition.
