John Atkinson Grimshaw

John Atkinson Grimshaw was an English painter famous for his atmospheric moonlit scenes. Born in Leeds in 1836, he largely taught himself to paint against his family's wishes. He became known for hauntingly beautiful nighttime views, rain-slicked city streets, misty docks, and country lanes lit by moonlight or gas lamps, rendered with remarkable detail and mood.

His skill at capturing the glow of light through fog and the wet shine of pavement gave his work a magical, slightly melancholy atmosphere. He painted the ports and cities of Victorian Britain as few others could. Grimshaw's enchanting moonlit scenes have made him one of the most distinctive and admired painters of nighttime in British art.
