Ju Lian

Ju Lian was a Chinese painter active in the nineteenth century and an important figure in the art of the Guangdong region in southern China. Born in 1828, he became known for delicate paintings of flowers, birds, and insects, rendered with careful observation and refined technique. He helped develop methods for capturing the freshness and texture of nature.

He was also an influential teacher, and his students went on to help found the modern Lingnan School of Chinese painting, which blended tradition with new ideas. His close study of the natural world set an example for the artists who followed. Ju Lian is remembered both for his own graceful nature paintings and for his lasting influence on southern Chinese art.
