Karl Friedrich Lessing

Karl Friedrich Lessing was a German painter known for landscapes and history scenes. Born in 1808, he became a leading figure of the Düsseldorf school of painting, admired for dramatic, carefully composed views of forests, mountains, and ruins. His landscapes often carry a brooding, Romantic mood, with rugged scenery and stormy skies.

He also painted bold historical pictures, some of which stirred controversy for their sympathetic view of religious reformers and rebels. His work combined technical skill with strong feeling and, at times, political meaning. Lessing was influential both through his paintings and his teaching, and he is remembered as an important figure in nineteenth century German art.
