Kōno Bairei

Kōno Bairei was a Japanese painter and influential teacher active in the nineteenth century. Born in Kyoto in 1844, he became a master of the traditional Japanese painting styles of his region, known especially for elegant images of birds and flowers. His work blends careful observation of nature with the refined brushwork and sense of design of the Kyoto schools.

He was also a dedicated teacher who trained many of the leading Japanese painters of the next generation, helping shape the transition into modern Japanese art. His illustrated books of birds and flowers were widely admired and reproduced. Bairei is remembered both for his own graceful nature paintings and for his lasting influence on Japanese art through his many students.
