Lee Krasner

Lee Krasner was an American painter and a major, long-underrated figure of Abstract Expressionism. Born in Brooklyn in 1908 to immigrant parents, she trained rigorously and was already a committed abstract artist when she married Jackson Pollock. For years her own reputation was overshadowed by his, even though she was a serious and inventive painter in her own right.

She constantly reinvented her style, cutting up and collaging her own earlier works, and produced powerful, energetic canvases full of bold shapes and rhythm. After Pollock's death she entered one of her strongest creative periods, working on a large, confident scale. Krasner is now recognized as one of the key artists of her movement, and her long fight for recognition has become part of her story.
