Luca Carlevarijs

Luca Carlevarijs was an Italian painter often regarded as the father of Venetian view painting. Born in 1663, he helped establish the tradition of the veduta, the detailed city view, that Canaletto and others would later carry to its height. He painted grand scenes of Venice, its squares, waterfronts, and splendid ceremonial events welcoming visiting dignitaries.

Trained in perspective and mathematics, he brought careful structure to his crowded, festive scenes. His work set the pattern for the souvenir views that wealthy travelers would prize throughout the century. Carlevarijs is remembered as a pioneer who laid the groundwork for one of Venice's most famous artistic traditions.
