Malcolm Browne

Malcolm Browne was an American journalist and photographer best known for a single searing image. Born in 1931, he was reporting from Vietnam in 1963 when he photographed a Buddhist monk who set himself on fire in a Saigon street to protest the treatment of Buddhists by the government. The photograph of the monk sitting calmly amid the flames shocked the world.

The image won a Pulitzer Prize and forced global attention onto the crisis in Vietnam, influencing even the highest levels of government. Browne continued a long career as a foreign and science correspondent. He is remembered above all for one of the most unforgettable and historically important news photographs ever taken.
