Nicolaas Baur was a Dutch painter who specialized in marine scenes and shipping. Born in 1767, he worked in the tradition of the great Dutch sea painters, depicting harbors, naval vessels, and busy coastal waters with careful attention to rigging, flags, and weather. He recorded specific ships and events as well as more general views of life at sea.
He is known for winter scenes on the ice as well, in the long Dutch tradition of skating pictures. His work combines a documentary eye with a feel for light on water and sky. Baur remains a respected name among specialists in Dutch marine painting of the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries.
