View towards Ry, Jutland

Harvest season is in full swing on this hillside in Jutland, where a farmer loads sheaves of grain onto a horse-drawn cart while golden bundles stand drying in neat rows across the field. Peder Mørk Mønsted painted this Danish landscape with the precise, almost photographic detail that made him one of the country's most sought-after painters in the late 1800s and early 1900s. Look at the individual stalks of wheat catching the light in the foreground, then follow the dirt road as it curves down toward the lake and the distant hills, where you can pick out the small buildings and church spire of the village of Ry.

Mønsted trained at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts and traveled widely, but scenes like this one, rooted in the Danish countryside he knew well, are what he is remembered for. He worked in a realist tradition and had little interest in the bolder, looser brushwork spreading through Europe at the time. His talent lay in patient observation, capturing the exact color of a cloudy summer sky reflected in still water and the texture of a heather-covered slope.
