Robert Ryman

Robert Ryman was an American painter closely associated with Minimalism, famous for devoting his career almost entirely to the color white. Born in Tennessee in 1930, he moved to New York and worked as a museum guard before becoming an artist. Rather than paint images, he explored painting itself, how paint sits on a surface, how it is applied, and how light falls across it.

His white paintings are far from empty, revealing subtle differences in texture, brushwork, edges, and the materials he used. He treated the simplest possible subject as a lifelong field of quiet experiment. Ryman's spare, thoughtful work asks viewers to slow down and notice the physical facts of painting, and he is regarded as an important figure in postwar abstraction.
