Robert S Duncanson

Robert S. Duncanson was a Black American painter who became one of the first African American artists to win international recognition. Born around 1821, he was largely self-taught and rose to prominence in Cincinnati, working in the Hudson River School tradition. He painted serene, glowing landscapes of the American countryside as well as scenes inspired by literature.

He traveled and exhibited in Europe, earning praise abroad at a time when racial prejudice sharply limited his opportunities at home. His idyllic, light-filled landscapes stand as a quiet achievement against great odds. Duncanson is now honored as a pioneering African American landscape painter and an important figure in nineteenth century American art.
