Takashi Murakami

Takashi Murakami is a Japanese contemporary artist who has blurred the line between fine art and popular culture. Born in Tokyo in 1962, he trained in traditional Japanese painting before developing a bright, cartoon-like style he links to a theory he calls Superflat, drawing on anime, manga, and the flatness of both Japanese tradition and consumer culture. His grinning flowers and playful characters are instantly recognizable.

He runs a large studio and has collaborated widely, including famous designs for a luxury fashion house and album covers for musicians. His cheerful surfaces often carry deeper themes of history, trauma, and consumerism. Murakami has become one of the most influential and commercially successful artists of his generation.
