Tina Modotti

Tina Modotti was an Italian photographer, actress, and political activist with a short but remarkable career behind the camera. Born in Italy in 1896, she emigrated to the United States and later moved to Mexico, where she became part of a vibrant circle of artists and revolutionaries. She learned photography from Edward Weston and quickly developed a powerful eye of her own.

Her images range from elegant studies of flowers and objects to strong, sympathetic portraits of Mexican workers and scenes charged with political meaning. Her deepening commitment to radical politics eventually pulled her away from photography altogether. Though she worked as a photographer for only a few years, Modotti's striking images have secured her a lasting place in the history of the medium.
