Umberto Boccioni

Umberto Boccioni was an Italian artist and the leading figure of Futurism, an early twentieth century movement obsessed with speed, machines, and the energy of modern life. Born in 1882, he threw himself into capturing motion and force on canvas and in sculpture, breaking figures into dynamic lines and overlapping forms to suggest movement through space.

His most famous work is a striding bronze figure that seems to flow forward as it moves, a bold attempt to freeze pure motion in metal. He wrote passionately about Futurist ideas and wanted art to break completely with the past. Boccioni's promising career was cut short when he died in 1916 during military training, but his work remains central to modern art.
