Utagawa Toyohiro

Utagawa Toyohiro was a Japanese woodblock print artist active around the turn of the nineteenth century. Born in 1773, he trained in the Utagawa school, one of the most important lineages in Japanese printmaking. He worked on prints and book illustrations and was known for graceful figures and landscapes, favoring a calm, refined style over flashy drama.

He is especially remembered as the teacher of Hiroshige, who would go on to become one of the greatest of all landscape print artists. Through that pupil, and through his own steady work, Toyohiro helped shape the direction of Japanese printmaking. He is valued as a solid and influential figure within the great Utagawa tradition.
