Willem van de Velde

Willem van de Velde the Younger was a Dutch painter regarded as one of the greatest marine artists of all time. Born in 1633 into a family of sea painters, he learned the craft from his father, who specialized in detailed drawings of ships. The younger Willem brought a superb feeling for light, weather, and water, painting calm harbors and stormy seas with equal skill.

Father and son eventually moved to England to work for the royal court, producing ship portraits and battle scenes for wealthy patrons. His ability to render sails, rigging, and shifting skies set a standard that influenced marine painting for generations. Van de Velde's serene calms and dramatic storms remain touchstones of the Dutch Golden Age at sea.
