William Wendt

William Wendt was a German-born American painter often called the dean of California landscape painting. Born in 1865, he emigrated to the United States and eventually settled in Southern California, whose golden hills, oak trees, and clear light became his lifelong subject. Working in a bold, structured Impressionist style, he painted the landscape with reverence and strength.

A deeply spiritual man, he saw nature as a kind of temple and painted it with quiet devotion, often leaving out people entirely to focus on the land itself. His firm, sculptural brushwork gave his hills and valleys a solid, monumental feeling. Wendt is remembered as one of the leading California Impressionists and a great painter of the Western landscape.
