Yamamoto Shunkyo

Yamamoto Shunkyo was a Japanese painter active in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Born in 1870, he worked in the traditional Kyoto style and became known for elegant landscapes and nature scenes painted with refined brushwork and a strong sense of design. He absorbed some Western ideas of realism while remaining rooted in Japanese tradition.

He became a respected teacher and a leading figure in the Kyoto art world, helping guide Japanese painting through a period of great change. His landscapes balance careful observation with the graceful simplicity of classical Japanese art. Shunkyo is remembered as one of the accomplished Kyoto painters of his generation.
