The Rockbound Coast by Alfred Thompson Bricher

The Rockbound Coast

Waves roll in against the jagged rocks along a stretch of rugged shoreline, their foam catching the pale light of an overcast sky. Alfred Thompson Bricher painted this coastal scene in the later part of the 1800s, and he built his reputation on exactly this kind of view: the meeting point of sea and stone, usually along the coasts of New England. Look for the two small sailing ships far out on the horizon, tiny reminders of human presence in a scene otherwise ruled by water and weather.

Bricher was loosely connected to the group of American painters who cared about light and atmosphere above all else, and you can see that interest here in the heavy, layered clouds and the way the green swell of the wave in the foreground turns almost translucent near its crest. He worked carefully, studying how water moves and breaks, and the result feels believable rather than showy. Perched on the cliff at right, if you spot it, is a small figure or marker that gives you a sense of just how large those rocks really are.
