Orange Shirt

A bold splash of yellow fills the entire background of this portrait, and against it stands a figure who seems in no hurry to look away. Amoako Boafo, born in Accra and later working out of Vienna, has quickly become one of the busiest names in contemporary painting. His signature finger painting method gives his portraits their unmistakable feel, and he uses flat, saturated backgrounds so that all attention rests on the person before us. Boafo paints Black subjects with a sense of pride and presence that runs through every piece. His success has been striking, going so far as to have his work carried into space by a private spaceflight company for an art project.
