Andrew J Russell

Andrew J. Russell was an American photographer best known for documenting the building of the first transcontinental railroad. Born in 1830, he worked as a photographer during the American Civil War before turning his camera to the great railroad push across the West. His most famous image captures the meeting of the rails at Promontory Summit in Utah in 1869, as two locomotives touch and crowds celebrate.

He photographed the vast western landscape, the engineering works, and the workers who made the railroad possible, creating a lasting record of a pivotal moment in American history. His pictures combine documentary value with a strong sense of composition. Russell's photographs remain some of the defining images of the opening of the American West.
