Arthur Wesley Dow

Arthur Wesley Dow was an American artist and hugely influential teacher. Born in Massachusetts in 1857, he is remembered less for a single famous painting than for changing how art was taught. Inspired by Japanese art and design, he developed a system built around composition, flat pattern, and the harmony of dark and light rather than copying nature exactly.

His ideas, spread through his book Composition and his teaching, shaped a generation of American artists, including Georgia O'Keeffe. He worked in painting, printmaking, and photography, favoring simple, well-balanced designs. Dow's emphasis on structure and pattern helped open the door to abstraction in American art, making him a quietly pivotal figure.
