The Long Road, Argilla Road by Arthur Wesley Dow

The Long Road, Argilla Road

By Arthur Wesley Dow

A dirt road curves through open fields toward a stand of trees, its rutted surface catching the afternoon light. Arthur Wesley Dow made this scene near Ipswich, Massachusetts, a landscape he returned to again and again throughout his career. The Argilla Road ran through the marshes and farmland of his hometown, and Dow knew it well enough to reduce it to its essentials: the sweep of the road, the flat green fields, the mass of foliage on the right, and a band of clouds above.

Dow was more than a painter. He taught art for decades and wrote an influential book called Composition, which shaped how generations of American artists thought about arranging shapes, lines, and areas of color. His deep interest in Japanese woodblock prints shows here in the simplified forms and the way the road divides the picture into clean, balanced spaces. Georgia O'Keeffe studied under him and credited his ideas with freeing her to paint the way she wanted. This modest view of a country road carries some of the thinking that helped push American art toward something new.
