A girl walks a small flock of sheep along a sandy track that winds through rolling heathland. This is the work of Peder Mørk Mønsted, a Danish painter who lived from 1859 to 1941 and built a long career capturing the countryside of his homeland. He trained at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts and became known for his patient, precise attention to natural detail, from the texture of sand to the flowering heather that Denmark's open moors are famous for in late summer. Mønsted painted in a realist style at a time when many artists were moving toward looser, more experimental approaches, and he stuck with what he did well.

The heather in bloom tells us the season is late summer, when Danish heathlands turn shades of pink and violet. Scenes like this one were disappearing even as Mønsted painted them, since much of the country's wild heath was later cleared for farming, which gives his careful record of these landscapes a bit of quiet historical value beyond their charm.
