Flock of Sheep with Shepherdess on a Rainy Day

A flock of sheep ambles down a wet, tree-lined path, their fleecy backs catching the faint glow of a grey autumn morning. Puddles from recent rain scatter across the ground, holding soft reflections of the animals, while a shepherdess drifts along ahead of them, half-swallowed by the mist. Fallen leaves dot the path and a few cling stubbornly to the bare branches overhead. The empty bench beside the tree hints at warmer days now gone. Everything feels damp and hushed, the sort of morning where sound seems to disappear into the fog.

Adolf Kaufmann, the Austrian painter behind this scene, was born in 1848 and spent much of his life traveling across Europe and into North Africa in search of landscapes to paint. He worked at a remarkable pace, turning out so many pictures that he sometimes signed them with invented names. That quirky habit has given art historians plenty of puzzles to untangle when tracking down which paintings are truly his.

Created in 1890, this work belongs to the gentle, atmospheric mood favored by many late nineteenth century European painters. Kaufmann skips bold colors and big drama in favor of soft, muted tones and hazy light. The result is a modest slice of country life, an ordinary rainy morning that he found worth setting down on canvas.
