Coastal scenery from Vang, Bornholm

A sandy footpath winds down through a hillside blanketed in purple heather, leading the eye toward the sea beyond. This is the coast near Vang on the Danish island of Bornholm, painted by Peder Mørk Mønsted, an artist known across Denmark for his skill at capturing outdoor light. The heather glows in shades of pink and violet against the dark green of the shrubs and trees, while the water shifts from deep blue to pale turquoise where it meets the distant shore.

Mønsted worked in a realist style, and he was famous for how precisely he rendered nature.
